Typical Vent Day: Indoor Temperature With vs. Without Smart Windows
Without smart windows (AC only)
With smart windows
Outdoor temperature
How this works: We use an RC thermal model (your house as a thermal capacitor slowly equilibrating with outdoor temperature) combined with real weather data for your city.
Smart windows open when outdoor temp drops below 70°F with dewpoint under 60°F, pre-cooling your home overnight. The savings shown are for the cooling season only.
Insulation is the assumption that moves the answer most: a tighter house holds the night's cool longer and avoids more air-conditioning hours. Our research paper reports a deliberately conservative τ = 15 hrs throughout, the value at which simulated runtime matches measured California consumption (CEC RASS 2019), so results here at τ = 22 or 30 read higher than the paper's.
